Osteopathic manual medicine has been around since the 1800s. Osteopathic medicine was introduced by an MD - Dr Andrew Taylor Still, who was discouraged by the medical practices of his time. He had lost family members to infection, and felt generally that the practices he had been taught were ineffective and sometimes harmful. He left clinical work for a time, and went searching. After intensely studying human anatomy, embryology, and pathophysiology for many years, he felt compelled to teach others, and started a new school, a new field of study, which he named Osteopathic Medicine. Those who have come after him and go through osteopathic school are doctors, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or DOs.

Dr Still believed that by correcting problems in the body’s structure, through the use of manual techniques, the body’s ability to function and heal itself could be greatly improved. In the 1800s, he was promoting the idea of preventative medicine and endorsed the philosophy that physicians should focus on treating the whole patient, rather than just a disease.

The Osteopathic Difference

Because Osteopathic doctors (DOs) are trained as physicians, the philosophy and techniques we use are distinct from that of others providing manual therapies; (ie chiropractic, massage therapy, physical therapy, orthobionomy, cranio-sacral work, etc.)

“There is no force that can be applied from outside the body that matches the healing force within the body.”
